As part of Restock Kroger – our plan to redefine the food and grocery customer experience in America – we declared our Zero Hunger | Zero Waste social impact plan as one of the fundamental pillars that enables us to Live Our Purpose: to Feed the Human Spirit™. Here is how we are measuring progress on our journey to end hunger on our communities and eliminate waste across our company by 2025.
Smith's Food and Drug is committed to helping our communities grow and prosper. Year after year, local schools, churches and other nonprofit organizations will earn millions of dollars through Smith’s Inspiring Donations. Smith’s Inspiring Donations makes fund-raising easy, all you have to do is shop at Smith's Food and Drug and swipe your Rewards Card.
Schools, churches, scout troops, sport teams or any established 501c3 may enroll in Inspiring Donations by clicking here.
Nonprofit groups with in-kind, sponsorship proposals, or cash requests from either Smith’s or the Kroger Foundation must be submitted using www.communitygifts.com. Fulfillment for these types of requests are focused on feeding people, especially those at risk. Requests will not be accepted by phone or fax and must be submitted 4 weeks prior to the desired fulfillment date.
Daily store donations of fresh, yet unsalable dairy, meat, produce and bakery items from Smith’s stores to local major food banks created 2.9 million meals for people who otherwise would go hungry. Checks written to food banks for equipment purchases and program support totaled $150,000. Smith’s generous customers donated $158,000 to our holiday program called Bringing Hope to the Table for the Holidays. 100% of their gifts were converted to gift cards that were then given to the food bank in every store community to purchase-needed food items at Smith’s.
Dozens of local organizations fighting against breast cancer will benefit from these donations, helping to support research and provide mammograms and other treatments for women in need. Proudly, we help fund cancer education classes and support groups, in addition to providing wigs, mastectomy supplies and transportation assistance.
Smith’s associates, customers and vendors partnered to raise $1.4 million for the charity care programs at Primary Children’s Medical Center in Utah, St. Rose Dominican Hospital’s Pediatric Unit in Las Vegas and University of New Mexico Children’s Hospital in Albuquerque. These three hospitals serve the children of families throughout the vast majority of Smith’s operating areas.
K-12 schools throughout Smith’s operating areas received more than $1 million. Five Las Vegas youth who overcame tremendous personal adversity received a $2,000 Smith’s Personal Best Scholarship, administered by the Clark County Public Education Foundation. In partnership with Martin Luther King Junior Day events, Smith’s also awarded $7,000 in scholarships to promising youth in New Mexico and Utah.
Smith’s is proud to continue our commitment to support our veterans, military service members and their families. Our commitment extends beyond words. Smith’s, along with all Kroger family of stores, are donating $1 million to our partners at the USO as part of our ongoing partnership and support of our veterans, service members and their families.
At a time when community needs had never been greater, Customers and Associates from Smith’s Food & Drug opened their hearts and wallets to support The Salvation Army’s annual Red Kettle holiday campaign. Each year from Thanksgiving until Christmas Eve, bell ringers work the iconic Red Kettles in front of our Smith’s stores. Every dollar donated during the annual program stays in the community where the money is raised and assists local families in need.
